Story

I was travelling back to Nottingham from two weeks at home for Easter, and, due to the online ticket sales system, whereby I could pick up a ticket at any station in the entire country except Nailsea & Backwell, I ended up starting my journey for the first (and quite possibly only) time at Yatton. I got there just in time to see a CrossCountry 221 blast through on its way south, and way too early for the train I was meant to be on, so rather than hang around I got an earlier train (First Great Western's 1558 to Cardiff Central, formed of 150247) to Bristol Temple Meads, where I was able to hang around in slightly more comfort, and also get some dinner (margarita pizza panini and a chocolate muffin). I got on the 1700 CrossCountry service to Manchester Piccadilly (220014, which had an exceptionally cool-looking train manager) and was able to exchange my rather rubbish pre-booked window seat (which in addition to being on the wrong side (I like to sit on the right hand side so I can see trains passing) didn't actually have a window) for a better one at a table. The journey was fairly uneventful - it was a bit slow in to Bristol Parkway, and I strangely saw a South West Trains (possibly East Midlands) 158 way further north than it should be, but we reached Birmingham New Street on what I assume was time. I saw two Arriva Trains Wales 158s leaving, headed west as we arrived, the first time I'd seen an ATW service at New Street, although I'd known they operated through there. The wait at New Street was annoying, as it is far from my favourite station, what with being dark, damp and cold and almost totally lacking in seating, but eventually CrossCountry 170111 arrived and was immediately filled, which is what you get when you put a two car train on a peak service - it would be nice if they could upgrade a few Nottingham-Cardiff services to Voyagers. Although I had a seat booked, it was taken, and I never like asking people to move when I'm able to stand, or rather slouch down in the vestibule. Derby as usual provided some interest, including two DRS 37s and 97301, and more importantly provided me with a seat - at a table no less, and opposite a sexy young lady. Then, after what seemed like half an hour waiting at the junction between the Midland Main Line and the direct route to Langley Mill, we arrived at Nottingham and I was able to get a taxi back to halls. A long journey.
