Story

I was travelling back to Nottingham after a few days at home, trying out the fare-saving method of buying a ticket to Cheltenham Spa and another for the southern part of the journey, which saves a few quid. Anyway, since the only restriction on my ticket was that I had to travel via Cheltenham, and I happened to get on a train headed to Cardiff Central, I decided to forego the usual route via Bristol Parkway and Yate and instead take the Welsh route, thus getting my first experience of the Severn Tunnel (it was quite dark). I set off on the 0900 First Great Western service to Cardiff from Nailsea & Backwell, operated by 158957, passing straight through Bristol Temple Meads where I saw what would have been my train (CrossCountry 221139). The 158 was probably more comfy though. I passed through several stations that until that point I'd only visited - Patchway, Pilning and Severn Tunnel Junction, and enjoyed a nice view across the river as we pulled in to Newport. I had intended to stay on until Cardiff and change there, but I was feeling rather tired due to the early (for me) hour, and then I noticed a CrossCountry 170 (*170107) on the opposite side of the platform from my train. A moment's indecision and I was running for it, dragging my ridiculously heavy case behind me. I just about managed to shove it into an overhead rack and just collapsed staring out of the window at the Severn-side scenery and passing through Severn Tunnel Junction again, this time in the other direction. The journey from that point on was fairly uneventful as I didn't have to change trains for the three hours it took to reach Nottingham, so I just curled up with a book and then when I got back to my room went to sleep.
