Newbie FAQ - Buying Vehicles

Neveron has over 100 different vehicle designs, of which around 50 are on the market regularly. It can be quite daunting trying to decide what you should and shouldn't pick, so I have created this page with some of the basic and common vehicles that people use, as well as instruct people on how to buy and commission their vehicles.

Buying Vehicles

Obviously, it helps to know HOW to buy a vehicle before you actually decide which to buy.  First click on the market tab, and then on the vehicles link (see below).

You'll be greeted by a screen much like the one below.  At the top is the option to hire soldiers - you'll need to do that later, but for now we'll ignore it.  I'll also assume that you are in the zone you want to buy things in.  By default, you can only see light vehicles - you can click the obvious tabs to view the given weight class. Master List brings up a list with links to the various vehicles so you can see them directly.

There are three sections of the market - faction, trade alliance and normal. Faction lists only vehicles sold by your faction - these are listed in orange and are discounted at a variable rate set by your faction leader (default is 50%) compared to standard market rates.  Trade Alliance (TA) lists vehicles sold by people you have a TA treaty with - these are listed in red and come at a 50% discount compared to standard market rates.  The normal market is just every vehicle that's for sale and is in the weight class - this includes stuff that is listed in TA/faction.  The columns, from left to right, list the number that empire has for sale, the vehicle code (click this for detailed info on the vehicle, plus a small advert by the empire selling the vehicle), the vehicle name, the weight, the cost, delivery time in nevhours (10 nevhours = 1 real hour. Delivery to n00b island is usually a standard 20mins or so), and the empire selling the vehicle.

To buy something, click its price.  You will be asked how many you want to buy - input a number up to the maximum number being sold by that empire, and click OK.  Read the following dialog box to check that what you ordered is what you want, and click OK.  The vehicles will be delivered to your armoury where you can commission them later.

coMMissioning Vehicles

OK, so you've bought your vehicle and gone through the time waiting for it to arrive (this is likely to be around 20mins on n00b island). Now, let's get your vehicle into your army. Click on the Armoury tab, and then the Vehicles link (see below).

You are now in the vehicle armoury, and it should look something like the screen below - this is an example I mocked up. As you can see, we are in the zone "mattbuck`s haven", and we have four vehicles that we could commission. Let's take a minute to look around. The top section tells you what vehicles are being shipped to this zone - in this case, none. But if there were, they'd be listed as (eg) "20 MINUTES: 1 Jeep". If you click the Zone List button, it lists all zones which have vehicles, sorted by vehicle, so you could see all zones with uncommissioned JEP-SRM for example. The bottom section, logistics, allows you to move uncommissioned vehicles around your empire, either to a flagged zone, or by entering coordinates manually. In the Unassigned Vehicles section, you can commission your units. To view the information about a specific unit type, click on its name (eg HNT-0A Hunter Light Tank). The first number tells you how many there are in the zone, in this case 3 HNT-0A and 1 VED-A6. The next number is the current lowest market price for a vehicle of that type, so we can see that when I wrote this, no one was selling VED-A6s. The final green icon is the button to recycle the unit for minerals - best leave that alone.

Let's commission our VED-A6. Click the Manage button next to the VED-A6 icon. You'll be taken to a screen something like the one below - this is known as the Vehicle Creation Console. It's fairly simple to use - choose a unit name, and put it in the Unit Name field. Then choose a CO/Driver for your vehicle - driving a vehicle is not an important skill, so let's just hire a new 8/8 driver for that. Then choose a Gunner - gunnery IS an important skill, as gunnery determines the chance your unit has to hit enemies with its weapons. If you're just starting out, you probably have an unassigned 4/4 skill soldier, so click the Gunner dropdown and choose the field marked "1 pilot at 4/4" If you don't see this, you may need to check the Include Mech Pilots button.. You can also click the Name, Skills or < > buttons to sort your vehicle pilots in different manners for ease of use. Finally, choose whether to number the vehicles sequentially. We only have one, so there's not that much point, and we don't have enough to form a lance or a company. Click Create Vehicle. You may commission up to 12 vehicles at a time, but we only have 1, so click ok.

Congratulations! Your new VED-A6 is commissioned, and after a short period of training (length depends on vehicle weight and empire level), will be ready for you to use in battle. First refresh your page, then click the Units tab, and click Vehicles to see it.

Basic Vehicles

These are the vehicles which are most useful for low level empires, and are generally fairly cheap.

GRD-1 Guardian

The Guardian GRD-1 is a very basic tank - it mounts an Long Range Missiles 10, but only has 12 rounds of ammo, and is vulnerable at close range.  It is also rather too lightly armoured.  They usually cost around $2,000,000.

GRD-2 Guardian

The GRD-2 is an upgrade to the standard GRD-1.  Upgrading to a mkII LRM rack means it can have more ammo, and also means the GRD-2 has no real problems with close-range fighting.  Unfortunately you still have to deal with the low armour.  They usually cost around $2,500,000.

HNT-0A Hunter Light Tank

The Hunter is one of the most useful and common tanks on Neveron, used at all levels. It has good firepower and its front armour means that it is hard to kill from the front.  It is vulnerable to flanking though, due to its lack of a turret, and when the enemy get in close (at which point its LRM rack becomes useless).  They usually cost around $3,500,000.

JEP-LRM Jeep

A JEP-LRM is a slightly heavier jeep, weighing in at 7t, and has less armour and move. It makes up for this by mounting an Long Range Missiles 5, which makes it the cheapest vehicle you can get with the longest range. That being said, it is very fragile. They usually cost around $900,000.

JEP-Machine Gun Jeep

A jeep is (obviously), one of the simplest vehicles on Neveron. The Machine Gun variant is the basic version - you start with 4 of these in a new empire (though those have 2/2/0/0 sensors). The JEP-Machine Gun is certainly nothing special, but can be annoying in large numbers. They usually cost around $500,000.

JEP-SRM Jeep

A jeep is (obviously), one of the simplest vehicles on Neveron. The SRM variant is probably the most common variant. It's fast at 7/11 move, and the Short Range Missiles 2 isn't a bad weapon for a 5t vehicle. They usually cost around $600,000.

SCP-A1 Scorpion Light Tank

The Scorpion is a workhorse vehicle - not especially useful on its own, but in numbers, they can be a headache. However, the fairly low ammo and low armour is a problem, and means that the SCP-A1 is usually passed over and replaced with LRM vehicles. It generally costs around $2,000,000.

SNP-1 Sniper Mobile Artillery

The Sniper is one of Neveron's most common vehicles, due to its quite insane weapon loadout. Two Indirect Fire Cannon 2s give it a range of 36 without requiring line of sight, making it perfect for backup and critting vehicles. Its lack of sensors mean that it has to be accompanied, usually by a mech. It is also quite slow at 3/5 move. A sniper usually costs somewhere around $15,000,000.

STR-00 Striker Light Tank

The Striker is one of the great all-round tanks of Neveron, with both LRMs and SRMs on a fast chassis. The downside is insufficient LRM ammo. Of course, due to tanks like Hunters being cheaper to maintain, the STR-00 has fallen somewhat out of favour, but it is still an excellent tank at low levels, costing around $3,500,000.

VED-A7 Vedette Medium Tank

The Vedette is a fairly rare tank, since currently it is only made by one empire, but it is quite useful. It has decent sensors, and is reasonably cheap, which makes it perfect for a low level sensor unit. Each VED-A7 costs around $8,000,000.

VNG-A4 Vanguard Medium Tank

The VNG-A4 is the A3's cousin, trading the Autocannon 10 for an Autocannon 20. This makes it vulnerable from range, but on the map its icon is identical to the VNG-A3, so people can often be fooled by it. Unfortunately, the Autocannon 20 only has 15 rounds of ammo, which is fairly puny. On the other hand, stuff it hits tends to die quite quickly. The VNG-A4 costs around $7,000,000 on average.

AIV-H1 Anti-Infantry Vehicle (Hover)

The AIV-H1 is your basic, flying anti-infantry vehicle. Unfortunately, infantry don't exist on Neveron, so its use tends to be charging in, dealing a few points of damage, and dying quickly. An AIV-H1 costs around $800,000.

BEH-44F Behemoth Assault Tank (Flamer Variant)

The BEH-44F, an upgrade to the 44V, well lives up to its name of Behemoth, mounting more weapons than any other unit on Neveron. Slabs of armour, and a weapon for every range make this unit devastating in combat - but not for long. Only 10 round of ammo for its primary weapons is a severe problem, as is the 12 rounds for the LRMs. It's also very slow at 2/3 move. On the upside, no mech will ever want to get close with the larger number of flamethrowers. Each unit costs around $50,000,000.

BEH-IDF Behemoth Assault Tank

The BEH-IDF, an upgrade to the 44V, is another veritable slab of armour. Replacing the twin AC-10s with a single IDF-10 gives slightly greater range, but more importantly, the ability to fire from behind cover. The fact that it has sensors allow it to use this ability to its full. The BEH is still hopelessly slow though, and expensive at $35,000,000.

BLD-G Bulldog Medium Tank

The BLD-G is a curiously overlooked vehicle, mainly because you can get a MAN-0 for the same support point cost, and the MAN-0, albeit slower, has an LRM rack, the lack of which leaves the BLD-G vulnerable to ranged fire. However, it has decent armour, and good close-range critting power. Each one costs around $10,000,000.

While the G-3 sacrifices its close range power, it gains a PPC, giving it power at long range, and returning it to not being dependant on ammo. However, it costs more, each around $15,000,000.

CCT-1A Cockatrice Wheeled Missile Tank

The CCT-1A would be a very popular vehicle but for one problem - it has wheels. It has thick armour, good long range weapons and decent ammo, but its wheels give it a high support point cost, making it cheaper to run an ONT-LRM, which is significantly more powerful. The payback is that the Cockatrice is fairly cheap, coming in at around $8,000,000.

CND-B3D Condor Medium Hovertank (AC Variant)

The CND-B3D is an upgrade to the B3M, replacing the medium lasers with an extra AC-5 and a larger engine. It does however suffer from low ammo, and while its speed can get it out of many tight spots, it doesn't have sufficient power to do any real damage. The ONT-00 is a tank you do NOT want to meet down a dark alley - eight medium lasers will make anyone cry in pain, and the LRMs allow it to do a small amount of damage from range (though not as much as the ONT-LRM). It is fairly slow at 3/5, but it is not designed to move much, more to sit back and shoot anything that comes close, making it useful for point defence around LRM vehicles. It is fairly expensive, around $30,000,000 apiece.

The whole vehicle is faster due to the inclusion of a fusion engine, and the SRMs are upgraded to a single SRM-6 launcher, but at the loss of a good sensor package. The fusion engine also ensures the T5 is not as cheap, coming in at around $5,000,000.

RIP-F01 Riposte

The Riposte was the first IDF vehicle to be introduced to Neveron, and it certainly is lacking compared to later vehicles such as the SNP-1, although this is partly due to weight. It has fairly low ammo, and the IDF-5 doesn't have great range, nor does the Riposte have any sensors, and it is very slow. The fact that it has no turret means that it needs to reposition itself frequently, making it more difficult to hit enemies. A Riposte is fairly cheap though, at around $3,000,000.

Popularly known as a "Savvie on Steroids", the SLD-1 is one of the most feared vehicles on Neveron. Its lack of sensors mean that it has to be accompanied, usually by a mech. It is also quite slow at 3/5 move. A sniper usually costs somewhere around $15,000,000.

This makes the STR-01 better at staying in the fight at range, where its speed make sit a hard target to hit. Unfortunately it is bad at close range. It is slightly cheaper than the STR-00, due to lower demand, at around $3,000,000.

STR-02 Striker Light Tank

The STR-02 is an attempt to make the STR-00 a better accompanying tank on landwar, adding some basic sensors and stealth technology. This does reduce the tank's effectiveness at close range though, and increases the price to around $6,000,000.

STRM-X Sturmfeuer Assault Tank

Of all the vehicles on Neveron, there is not one which is more of a pain to kill than the STRM-X. It has more armour than god, and its weapons can hurt you while you close, even though it has quite low ammo. It's one of the few vehicles designed to be able to retreat and rearm. It does cost around $40,000,000 though, so most people favour the ONT-LRM.

SWT-81D Switchblade Infantry Fighting Vehilce

The SWT-81D is the best true AIV on Neveron, mounting four machine guns for the most effective infantry killing. Unfortunately no infantry exist on Neveron, so its use is limited to its range of 3. It can still be an annoyance - death by 1000 cuts - but of little practical use. It costs around $1,500,000.

TX-L2 LRM Carrier

The TX-L2 is an upgrade to the TX-LRM, fixing the ammo issues, adding a turret, extra armour, a targeting computer, sensors, and fixing the close range problem. Admittedly it's less a whirlwind of death now, but it can stay in the fight longer. It costs around $20,000,000, making it a rival to the ONT-LRM

TX-SRM SRM Carrier

The TX-SRM is extremely scary. For 5 turns, at which point it runs out of ammo. But in that time it puts out 60 missiles per turn, meaning it can crit anything. It is however slow, weakly armoured, and is utterly vulnerable at anything beyond range 9. It costs around $10,000,000.

URL-147 Uriel Assault Tank

The URL-147 is one of the oldest vehicles on Neveron, and the most deadly, mounting a PPC and AC-20. Unfortunately, it requires a large fusion engine, which makes it unlikely it will ever be manufactured on Neveron. It also has low ammo. But stuff that is near it dies. It costs over $50,000,000.
