Newbie Guide - 10 questions

Article by LordSI

Hello and welcome to the wonderful game of Neveron! Here I’ll be helping to ease the learning curve a bit by answering some Frequently Asked Questions by new players.

1. How many of each building type should I have?

You should build four residential buildings for every research facility or commercial building of the same size. At low level, it’s beneficial to build research facilities in preference to commercials so you can get bigger buildings.

2. How do I set research?

First, Go to the research tab and click facilities. Then go to the bottom of the page where you should see something like this (if you have any completed research facilities in the zone).

None 4 yes 25 18

Now, check the little box, go select what research you want the facility to be researching and hit Set Research Goal.

3. Ok, I tooled some facilities but how come it doesn’t show any progress?!?!

There are many answers to this question. First, did you just tool the facilities? You must wait at least one nevday before any progress is shown so be patient. If that is not the case, then check to make sure you have enough people to staff the facility by going to the empire page and hitting stats. Once there, hit economic stats and see if it says that you need more people. If that’s the case, build more residential buildings.

4. Everyone is telling me to join a faction! Why should I join a faction, what level do I have to be to join a faction, and can you suggest any good ones?

The benefits of joining a faction are many and the penalties are few. The most important benefit is that you can have factionmates battle for you in large-scale battles where you will not be able to control all of your units or when you’re offline. Another bonus is that you can buy units from other faction members for a discount.

To join a faction, you must be at least level 1.

The best way to get into a faction is to be chat-active – ask in #neveron or #neveron_newbies if anyone is recruiting. See the IRC FAQ for details on getting on IRC, or use the basic java applet in Comms > Chat.

5. So what are the requirements to get to level one and levels beyond?

To get to level 1, you must have a combined total of 1000 battlevalue and population. The combined requirement increases 1 2 5 10 20 50, etc. For more information, click “Empire Level:” on the empire data pane.

6. I don’t understand the concept of Nevtime! Will you explain it?

Nevtime passes at a rate ten times that of real life. Here’s a little table which explains the more commonly used conversions.

Nev Time

Real Time

10 Nevminutes

1 Real Minute

1 Nevhour

6 Real Minutes

1 Nevday

2.4 Real Hours (2hrs, 24mins)

30 Nevdays

3 Real Days

1 Nevyear

36.5 Real Days

7. Why can’t I bet in the arenas?

There is a level-based cap on your maximum bet. At level 0, this cap is $0, and so you may not bet.

8. Why am I losing money to Administrative Overhead?

Administrative Overhead is a function of land area and population. The less population you have per zone (on average), the higher your admin overhead. You can therefore reduce it by unclaiming zones or building more residential buildings.

9. What is Oversize Military Tax (OMT) and why am I losing money from it?

OMT is a cost incurred from having too many units and not enough population to support them. It’s a way to stop people creating empires with no population. You can reduce OMT by building more residential buildings, or by changing the configuration of your army – mechs, infantry and hover vehicles cause the most OMT, while tracked vehicles cause the least.

10. How come some units train well and others don’t?

The chance that each soldier will skill down from training depends on the soldier’s skill multiplier (base chance of skilling down) for the skill being trained. Some soldiers are dumber than bolts and will never learn no matter how much money you throw at them. Others can fire a rocket into enemies, miles away, and hit their first shot. Multipliers are randomly generated.
