The Archive - The Platonian (2007) - Invasion3042 section
irc IRC is an acronym for Internet Relay Chat. It is a collection of various networks and servers to let people chat with each other, originally developed for use by academics. We use it to talk about a computer game.
The most basic way to get onto Invasion3042 chat is through the java applet. From the Invasion3042 website, click the chat button, or alternatively, click here. You'll be asked to choose a username. Choose one (preferably not Traveler or Guest or Newname). Input channel as #invasion3042, then click continue. A java applet will load, and after a while you should see something along the lines of: [23:49] *** Topic is

Please don't wait for someone else to speak or you'll never get a reply. Also, remember to scroll down. You can join a different channel by typing /join #channel (replace channel with some chatroom name), and can change your name using /nick newnick. You can talk in private with people by double clicking their name (right hand bar).
For those of you who have an IRC client set up already, Invasion uses irc.afternet.org:6667, channel #invasion3042. You can use port 16667 if you have trouble connecting.
If you want to use IRC more frequently, it's best to get a proper standalone client. I use mIRC as it's very nice and customisable, as well as fairly easy to use. First off, you need to download the mIRC installer. This is available for free from www.mirc.com - click on the Download link on the left side of the page, and choose a server close to you. Save the file to a folder on your hard drive so you can access it easily in future without having to download it. Run the installer, go through the process, etc. Yaddah yaddah. When install is complete, a dialog box will come up asking if you want to launch mIRC. You do. (NOTE: If it asks you to register, just ignore it - you do not need to register, mIRC will not stop working after the trial period runs out).
You will be confronted with the screen akin to the one above, only with no details filled in. Fill in these details with your own - you don't need to provide your real name, call yourself George Bush for all it matters. Ditto the email address - it doesn't even have to be an email - I tend to use my website URL.
Click the star icon. Set the screen that appears so that it mimics the settings above. Now click the "Connect to Server" button.
You will be presented with a window like this. Type in #invasion3042 in the top box and click "join" - then click OK. You're now in channel #invasion3042 - this is the main channel for Invasion. Individual clans/houses have their own channels that may or may not be open to the public. To join any channel, type /join channel, eg /join #invasion3042_newbies.
It's a good idea to register with the AfterNET servers. AfterNET uses a service called Authserv for this purpose. Once you're registered you can be added to room member lists, which is very useful for factions so that you can talk to your factionmates in real time to get advice, coordinate assaults, or just make friends. To register with authserv, use the following command: /msg Authserv REGISTER username password email The email address must be valid, and not Hotmail. You'll be sent some form of registration cookie/confirmation link. Follow instructions provided in the email. When you're registered, you can log in using /msg Authserv AUTH username password You can set mIRC up to automatically log you in. See the AfterNET website for more details.
